What to expect

Overall, expect something upbeat, welcoming, and energising rather than intense or formal.

Even if you’ve never sung in a group before, you’ll be able to join in pretty quickly.

Warm, informal, welcoming sessions

You will  be welcomed in by your admin and your name will be ticked off on our registration sheet. You will be introduced to your coach, if it’s your first night, and placed in one of the choir sections.

Learning by ear (no pressure on sheet music)

One of our defining features is that we roll songs out by ear rather than relying on sheet music. You’ll repeat lines, build harmonies, and pick things up gradually. You will also have access to all your parts recorded vocally so that you can practise at home.

Group singing & harmonies

You’ll spend most of the time singing together as a group, sometimes singing with just your section, but it’s very beginner-friendly. You won’t ever be asked to sing on your own.

Popular, feel-good songs

Expect modern pop, soul, or classic crowd-pleasers rather than formal choral pieces. The goal is enjoyment and confidence, not perfection.

Supportive, no-audition atmosphere

There’s no audition required, and the vibe is very inclusive. Mistakes are completely normal, and the emphasis is on fun.

Performances

If there’s an upcoming event, you might run through songs a few times, we work on movement too, which adds a fun and interesting element to our performance. The rehearsals take on a more focussed feel as an event approaches however they will still be fun and relaxed. Members require to purchase a Sing in the City t-shirt to participate in shows/events.

Social element

A big part of Sing in the City is community—people often chat before/after, and sometimes head out for drinks or meet up outwith choir rehearsals.

What to bring / wear

Just wear something comfortable, bring water, and bring a folder so you can create a bank of lyrics as you begin to learn.
